“....a superfluity of songwriting talent...a legitimate heir to the Canadian storyteller legacy established by Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell.”

ME AND ABBEY ROAD

April 27/200 4:23 PM

I never quite made it big in music. In fact I didn’t even make it small. I’ve toured across Canada, but in my own van. I’ve opened for some big names, but not at the height of their careers. I’ve had a few songs on television but I don’t even know on what shows. And I’ve had a song or two (okay, one) very close to being in a big movie.

Be Brave Tonight got all the way to pre-screens in LA and final mixes in London's Abbey Road studios before being yanked at the last minute in favour of an orchestra in the denouement of Message In A Bottle. Was it the right move? Could the song have drastically changed the box-office numbers on their opening weekend?

These questions are still regularly fought over between studio moguls from Los Angeles to Bollywood. I’ve had late-night teary phone calls from Hollywood execs and editors at big-time magazines asking my opinion. What happened? What went wrong? I’ve never said a word until now. And the truth is…I don’t know.

I just don’t know.

But as that great old song from the 70s sums up: “I got the music in me.” And nothing will stop me singing, except maybe death or a throat operation.
